When possible, begin changing routines before hospital admission.

  • Begin to have routine meal and snack times.
  • Clean out drawers, purses, cupboards, cars and other places goodies might be stashed.   Llike gums and candies.
  • Change toothpaste to a keto-friendly type
  • Lock pantry & food cupboards, if you feel it necessary
  • Try keto style meals to see what your child favors
  • Learn which are low-carb foods and sample for your child
  • Get and learn how to use the keto meal planning programs
  • Identify low-carb food resources like Speak with others who have started the diet.

Expect it to be *very* challenging during the first few weeks.  It is a real life-style change for the entire family.

Constipation is often a problem.   This product can help but be sure you let them know it's for a keto-kid and find out if they have changed their product to include any carbs.  Calcium Magnesium Liquid is available from Whole Life Nutritional Supplements. Bickford Flavorings are non-alcoholic, contain no sugar and no salt. Hundreds of flavors are available by calling (216) 531-6006 with credit card orders. Bickford Flavors 19007 St. Clair Ave., Cleveland, OH 44117     - (if your child is sensitive to artificial dyes or flavors, be cautious is using these.  I only say that as my daughter had behavior outbursts after trying some of the flavors she was sensitive to.  The maple syrup one is great for melting with butter and a little keto-friendly sweetner as a tasty addition).

Still Hungry?  If you child is still very hungry and you are using much cream, try what I did.  I pretty much eliminated cream and recalculated menus so that those carbs were used in leafy green veges like fresh spinach salads with lots of mayonaise, bacon, crumbled blue cheese and other goodies we could calculate into the meal.  (Be sure to have your dietician recalculate meals or do it yourself with the meal planner!)
